New Rochelle is a city in Westchester County New York. It is located in the south eastern region of the state and has a total area of 13.2 square miles. The city received its name from French settlers who arrived in 1688. These settlers originally were from La Rochelle France and decided to call their new home, New Rochelle. With a population of 72,182 it is the second largest city in Westchester County and seventh largest in the state. For a city of this size it is the safest having the lowest crime rate in the state and fourth lowest in the nation. Another benefit is New Rochelle’s short distance from New York. This makes for an easy commute for work or play. It is only 16 miles from Grand Central Terminal in New York. Interstate 95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway are the two major roads running through the city. New Rochelle is an exciting and eventful city. The gym in Salesian High School was the set for the music video of the popular song “Dance, Dance,” by Fall Out Boy. Notable residents of the city include Jay Leno and J.C. Penny.

New Rochelle offers great educational opportunities. The College of New Rochelle, Ion College and Monroe College- New Rochelle all are located in the city. The college of New Rochelle opened in 1904 and was the first private Catholic College for Women in the New York State. It offers studies in areas such as art, business, education, nursing and psychology. Iona College was rated “Best Northeastern Colleges 2008,” by the Princeton Reviews. It has an impressive 13 to one student to faculty ratio and a total student enrollment of 4282. Various studies are offered in the school of arts and science, Hagan School of Business and Professional Studies Program. Other nearby institutions include Suny College at Purchase, Mercy College-Main Campus, Manhattan College, Fordham University, Cuny Lehman College and Monroe College-Main Campus. Students are served by the three time Blue Ribbon City School District of New Rochelle. This diverse school system offers more then 240 courses in areas including Vocational Education, College Preparatory and Business Education. The nationally recognized New Rochelle school system was ranked as one of the top 20 school systems in the country by both Newsweek and the Wall Street Journal. A few of the larger schools include New Rochelle High School (265 Clove Rd), Albert Leonard Middle School (25 Gerada Ln), Isaac E Young Middle School (270 Centre Ave), William B. Ward Elementary School (311 Broadfield Rd) and Trinity Elementary School (180 Pelham Rd). There are also an abundance of excellent private schools to choose from. Iona Preparatory School is a National school of excellence. It is an all boys catholic high school with an enrollment of about 750. Other private schools in New Rochelle include The Ursuline School (all girls), Salesian High School, Iona Grammar School, and Blessed Sacrament Elementary.

New Rochelle is a great place to get active outdoors. It was ranked as one of the 100 Best Walking Cities in America by the American Podiatric Medical Association. The 2 mile Leatherstocking Trail is a great hiking trail located between New Rochelle and Mamaroneck. Enjoy the scenic walk which leads to Saxon Woods County Park. Because of New Rochelle's location water activities are endless. Along the shoreline various clubs can be found. Some of the largest ones include The Greentree Country Club as well as The Surf Club. New Rochelle's islands are a huge source of recreation. Glen Islands Park connects five islands and dates all the way back to 1879. The park now spans over 150 acres with a stunning beach. Ward Acres is another great place to spend the day. It offers hiking through natural forest, exercise trails along with amazing views. The city of New Rochelle also offers great golfing venues.
