The City of White Plains is located in south central Westchester County, New York.

It is the county seat with a growing population of 53,077. This number dramatically jumps to over 200,000 on weekdays during the day. The first census in 1790 accounted for 505 people. This population remained fairly constant until the mid 1800s when the New York Railroad caused a major jump in numbers. White plains was incorporated as a village in 1866 and officially became a city in 1916. Currently the city is bordered by Greenburgh, Scarsdale, Harrison and North Castle. White Plains is in a great location close to New York City making for an easy commute. Interstate Highway 287 is the main road that passes through the city. The city has two main railroad stations. North White Plains station as the name indicates is located in North White Plains. The other, White Plains Station, is located near downtown White Plains.

White Plains is home to a number of higher education institutions. A few of the larger well recognized ones include Berkeley College, Pace University-White Plains, The Westchester Business Institute, Drake School of Westchester and Mercy College-White Plains Branch Campus. Berkley College was established in 1931 and primarily focuses on business, offering professional programs, Associate Degrees and bachelor Degrees. It is located on 99 Church Street which is a great central location. The Westchester Business Institute is another great school with a student enrollment of just over 1,000. This school offers certificate (1-2 years) and Associate Degrees. If White Plains can’t satisfy your academic needs there are various other nearby institutes all within 13 miles. A few of these include Iona College, Manhattan College and The College of New Rochelle. Iona College was rated “Best Northeastern Colleges 2008,” by the Princeton Reviews. It has an impressive 13 to one student to faculty ratio and a total student enrollment of 4282. Various studies are offered in the school of arts and science, Hagan School of Business and Professional Studies Program. High, middle and elementary school students are served by the White Plains Public School System. A huge asset of this school district is the Controlled Parents’ Choice Program. Students can be bussed to school therefore this program enables parents to choose which school their children will attend based on reasons other then proximity. Public schools offered include White Plains Senior High School, White Plains Middle School, George Washington School, Ridgeway School, Church Street School, Mamaroneck Avenue School and Post Road School. If private schools are what you’re looking for White Plains has a number of options. Some of the larger private schools include Archbishop Stepinac High School, Acad Our Lady Good Counsel, Windward School, St. Anthonys School and St. John Evangelist School. One notable private school is the German School New York. This K-12 school has a student enrollment of 350 and is one of only six German schools in the United States.

White Plains is an active city with numerous events and festivals. A few well known annual events include the Cherry Blossom Festival in Turnure Park (May 4th), Juneteenth Parade and Festival (June 14th) and the White Plains Outdoor Arts Festival (May31st to June 1st). There are also numerous parks located throughout the city. Delfino Park located on Lake Street, offers three tennis courts, playground, picnic facilities, and softball fields. Gardella Park offers free admission to its pools for White Plains residents. This year it is open from June 23 until September 2. Liberty Park is another great spot with Silver Lake on premisies offering exciting water activities. Spend the day fishing, use one of the pedal boats, canoe or even take kayak lessons. For the sports oriented the city has great selection of golf courses. Maple Moor Golf course opened in 1927 making it the first public course in Westchester County. It is an 18 hole course located off the Hutchinson River Parkway. The Ridgeway Country Club is another great spot to work on your game. It is a beautiful 18 hole course with a 71 par located at 400 Ridgeway. The Club offers other types of recreation as well including tennis, a fitness center and an Olympic sized swimming pool. Numerous shopping centers can also be found throughout the city including the Galleria at White Plains Shopping Center and Westchester Pavillion Mall Shopping center.
